Machine check

  1. Ambu Bag: Should be in the box on the wall.
  2. Oxygen Alarm Check: Turn on machine and turn up O2 flows. Unplug the green O2 hose from the wall behind the machine. Listen for O2 alarm, then plug the hose back in.
  3. Oxygen Tank (if available): Turn the key to open up the O2 tank, remember to close it back! Check to ensure that the tank is not empty (Should be > 1000 PSI)
  4. Test Flowmeters: Ensure that you cannot deliver a hypoxic mixture. Ensure that Nitrous and Oxygen are delivered at a 3:1 ratio.
  5. Calibrate O2 Sensor: Unscrew the knob. Calibrate the machine to Room Air after the O2 concentration reaches 21%. Go to “Setup/Calibration” → “O2 sensor” → 21 % → ”Start Calibration”. Replace the knob when calibration is complete.
  6. Check CO2 Sensor: Unscrew the CO2 tubing and breathe into it. Look for ETCO2 on the monitor.
  7. Ensure CO2 Absorber is not exhausted: Look for color change of CO2 Absorber or capnography that does not return to baseline.
  8. Positive Pressure Leak Test: Turn up your O2 flows and occlude the end of the circuit with your thumb and close APL valve. Ensure that there is no leak in the circuit and that pressure does not decrease for 10 sec. This should be done between cases whenever there is a new circuit added.
  9. Bellows Check: Take off the bag and attach it to the end of your circuit. Flip the ventilator on and watch that your bellows and delivered tidal volumes are the same.
  10. Suction: Ensure that suction is available and ADEQUATE! (should be strong enough to suction to your thumb).
